The German quarterly “Chinese Law Journal” is jointly edited by the Sino-German Institute of Law of Nanjing University and University of Göttingen, the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Private Law in Hamburg, and the German-Chinese Association of Jurists. It is a legal journal aimed at introducing China's latest developments and research results in law to German-speaking scholars. The journal was founded in 1994 under the name "China Law Newsletter" and was renamed to its current name in 2004.

Since its inception, the journal has actively introduced Chinese laws and regulations, publishing German translations of laws such as the Contract Law of the People's Republic of China, Property Law of the People's Republic of China, Tort Liability Law of the People's Republic of China, General Rules of the Civil Law of the People's Republic of China, and the Civil Code of the People's Republic of China. These translated laws and relevant judicial interpretations by the Supreme People's Court have received widespread acclaim in academic circles both domestically and abroad. At the same time, the journal reports on international academic seminars on German law and Sino-German legal comparisons held in the Chinese mainland in the first place and introduces new books on German law and Sino-German legal comparisons in Chinese and German. It has become an academic journal that has been collected over the years by academic institutions in China researching German and EU law and academic institutions in the German-speaking world researching Chinese law.
